As a life long artist...

I feel like I see the world differently. My eyes crave beauty and color in my everyday surroundings. I see the complex expanding patterns of nature in flowers and trees. I see symmetry and pleasing lines in the historic architecture of Maine buildings. I am overwhelmed by the natural landscapes of Maine's Lakes and mountains. I get lost in the rugged coastal views and harbors. I am compelled to paint, to create, to write, and help others see this extraordinary place through eyes wide open...

Freedom is such a powerful word yet it can mean so many things to different people. In America, we say Freedom is not free. A reference to the many American soldiers who have given their lives for our freedom.

Below - Titled, " Forget Not the Tyranny" A watercolor in honor of the ongoing struggle for freedom so many still face in many parts of the world today. Part of a series of watercolors exploring what freedom means to different people. It is not well known that a piece of the actual Berlin Wall resides in Portland, Maine. This day in June of 2014, it was set up on DiMillo's Wharf during the Old Port Festival in front of the ferris wheel, both temporarily.

Nov. 9th, 1989 A day when the world stood up for the freedom of others. The carefree and colorful spirit of the iconic ferris wheel in the background makes me think of what it must have felt like to be on the other side of that wall that day. For the love of freedom...

Below- "From the Ashes We Will Rise" Watercolor. In honor of the beautiful and proud Kurdish people. The fight for Kurdish freedom has been a long and painful one. They remain proud and honorable, and strong. Democracy, huge gains in human rights, and religious freedom have risen from the Kurdish autonomus region of Iraq.

"Find Your Wings" Watercolor. A woman's struggle for personal freedoms. Freedom from opression, abuse, violence, and other injustice. Freedom to become her true self and overcome societies expectations of pre- defined roles.

"Spirit Rising" Watercolor and watercolor pencil. I got a little obsessed with painting fire on my last few paintings. I really like the effect of the oranges and reds flickering over the paper. Spirit Rising represents the soul's freedom though enlightenment.

"Phoenix" Watercolor. Rebirth. The freedom to start anew. The fierce driving desire to be free from supression all the world over. We can not be truly free as a race of humans until every person on this Earth is valued the same.

From the ashes, comes beauty, new life. The story of the phoenix is retold in all cultures. It is a symbol of the fierce human desire to be free.
